A particularly bad streak

[I sought out to make this story sound light, funny, and humorous - but having re-read it I realize that it has quite the opposite effect. If you are feeling down in the dumps in any way - I recommend redirecting yourself to wherever you usually go on the internet for fun and whimsy - otherwise, proceed at your own depression-inducing risk.]

23 minutes. That's about how much time Husband and I have spent together since Monday night. Here's how it has gone down . . .

On Tuesday morning he kissed me goodbye (1 minute) and left the house around 4:30 - way before I was awake. He was on-call Tuesday night, and got home around 1:00 pm on Wednesday - while I was at work. By the time I got home from work he was passed out on the couch. I moved him up to the bed (5 minutes) and then made myself some dinner. I got into bed around 9:30, he woke up around 10:00 and went downstairs for dinner of his own. I'm assuming that we slept in the same bed - but I really wouldn't know because he was out of the house on Thursday before I woke up. (Although he does kiss me goodbye every morning - so we'll add another minute)

He had call again on Thursday night. He got home around 2:30 pm on Friday (of course, while I was at work). Rinse and repeat. He was sleeping when I got home. I ate dinner while he slept on the couch. By the time he arose to fix himself something to eat for dinner, I was already in bed. We did talk for about 10 minutes before I fell asleep on Friday night . . .

And now it's Saturday. Not sure what time he left this morning - but I definitely remember waking up to use the bathroom while he got dressed, I'm sure we said "goodmorning" or something of the sort (1 minute). He has call AGAIN tonight . . . which means the next time I will see him will be Sunday morning. (But only briefly, before he goes back to bed.)

Normally we'd be up to only 18 minutes . . . BUT on Thursday I went to the hospital during lunch to visit one of my students who broke his femur during a football scrimmage. I paged Husband when I got there and he was able to sit with me for about 5 minutes while I wolfed down a Chick-Fil-A sandwich. He paid for my lunch and even got up to get me a lemonade refill - it was our most romantic (read: only) meal together all week. I loved all 5 minutes of it :)

The Mystery Trip

As I mentioned last year about this time - the first week of school we take the 9th graders (about 90 of them) on a "Mystery Trip". Basically we load them all into some form of transportation and no one knows what our destination is until we get there. We spend the day in some city doing some activity and then turn around and come back that evening.

This year the Mystery Trip destination was Atlanta - some of the kids were disappointed at first - since Atlanta is only 2 hours away (the chaperones, on the other hand, were ECSTATIC). All disappointments faded as the day unfolded. We saw the Bodies Exhibit and the Dialogue in the Dark exhibit at Atlantic Station. Both of which were amazing.

We had lunch at the Varsity (where I got to see my Dad briefly), then toured the Georgia Aquarium, visited the Coca-Cola Museum (where the kids went DIRECTLY to the infamous tasting room), took the CNN Studio Tour, and then went to a Braves game at Turner Field. The afternoon was so packed we were literally running from one venue to the next. I lived in Atlanta for 27 years and I never did so much in a single day!

Needless to say we were EXHAUSTED when we returned at 1:30 in the morning after the game. (Which went into overtime - naturally.) All in all, the kids are hailing it as the "best mystery trip ever." I'd have to agree.

Slug-ness

I signed on today to write about what a slug I was this weekend - only to realize that the last post I wrote was about my slug-ness LAST weekend. Not a good sign..

I actually did get some housework done this weekend. And I did get out-and-about for breakfast with friends on Saturday and a double one-year-old birthday party for two of the resident's kids. (So cute!)

Work last week was a bit crazed since the first day of school is Monday . . . we had faculty week Monday through Wednesday and then orientation for the kids on Thursday and Friday. I was reminded of how my days go during the school year - basically I arrive at work at 7:50, take care of a million things, turn around to realize that it is already 3:30, and THEN begin the work that I need to get done for the next day. I swear I do not know where the days go . . . it's not like I'm socializing! It's one meeting after another after a class after a parent call after chapel after advisee group, after another meeting after lunch duty and then it's done.

Tomorrow is the first day of class, and then Tuesday we leave for the infamous Freshman Mystery Trip. We're not going as far away this year - but it should be fun and I will certainly post about it when we return.

Until then . . .

Clearing the Air

I'm embarrassed to write this. But I will anyway.

Last week I was at my friend Laisa's house for dinner. I was telling her that this weekend I was planning on taking care of a few things that need to be done now that we've lived in our house for a full year: pay own homeowners dues, schedule pest control services, change our air filters . . .

She looked at me with this confused look, and I immediately thought 'poor, sweet, innocent, Laisa - this is probably the first house they've owned as well - she doesn't know about changing the air filters!'

So I said to her (kindly), "You know, you are supposed to change the air filters, right?"

It turns out I misread her. That look of confusion was actually a mixture of pity and mild disgust . . . as she replied (kindly), "Yes - but I believe you are supposed to change them every 3 months."

We changed them this weekend (finally). It had been at least a year. I am disgusted with myself.

Around Town

A big, hardy "thank you" to everyone who called to make recommendations regarding my fiber intake. It is nice to know that people actually read what I write, and even nicer to know that my digestive health is of genuine concern to others.

In an effort to change the subject . . . I present to you two note-worthy pictures that I took in the past month from my phone (sorry for the grainy footage) around Greenville.

First - is this the biggest dog you have ever seen? Holy Cow!!
And second - does it seem odd that these three items are sold at the same store?
