An open letter to Locks of Love

Dear Locks of Love,
Great news. I once heard an old wives' tale that heartburn during pregnancy is directly proportional to the amount of hair that the baby is born with. Judging by the constant fire blazing through my esophagus for the past several months, I think it's safe to assume we will be making a donation of the required 10 inches of hair soon after the birth.

Very sincerely.

Memories

Remember when I had ankles? I do. Those were fun times. Now all I'm left with is a dark splotchy pattern of veins to remind me where my ankles are supposed to be. I actually took a picture of this horrid sight, but decided that the visual was probably too much for some.

Carpool

First day of school today and first time dropping Lola off in "carpool". As her teacher lifted her out of the car, I heard her say "carpool is only for big girls."

She is growing up so fast! Tear.

Stall

Amongst the litany of stall tactics that Lola now employs at bedtime:
"I'm a little bit thirsty"
"I need to wash my hands"
"My teeth hurt"
"I need medicine"
"Have to go tee tee" (although she usually does - so we can't call her out on that one).

Feelings

Conversation in the car today:
Lola: My head hurts
Me: (worried that something could be legitimately wrong - I try to get to the bottom of this).  I'm so sorry sweetie.  What kind of hurt is it?  Is it like a headache or does it feel like a boo boo?
Lola: It's my feelings
Me: What?
Lola: My feelings are hurt
Me: (Now my heart is breaking.  Her feelings are hurt?!? How did this happen? And who am I going to have to hunt down for hurting my sweet baby's feelings?!?) Oh no.  How did your feelings get hurt?
Lola: I fell down.

The makings of a great day

Today, Lola was all smiles when I picked her up from school. I asked her how her day was and she threw her arms in the air and said "GREAT!". I asked why it was so great and she responded excitedly, "I got a cupcake and no one growled at me!" Sounds like a pretty great day to me, too.

Conundrum

I am sitting in the lazy boy rocker with my adorable nephew asleep in my arms. (asleep, I should mention, after almost an hour of crying hysterically - something about our house which has completely thrown off his usual normal sleeping mojo). I'm so proud of myself that I still have what it takes to rock a baby to sleep. Although I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to transfer him to the crib - being as it is that my 34-week-pregnant-belly prevents me from even coming within 1 foot of the crib rail. Short of dropping him into the crib from a height of 3 feet above the mattress - I see few available options here.

Update: My mother in law rescued me and made the transition to the crib. All is well.

Cousins!

This picture might lead you to believe that the weekend was all kisses and family-bonding. Truth be told there were a fair share of personal space issues, but this moment really made it all worth it. Thanks for visiting us Cousin Ollie!! (and putting up with Lola's irrational fear of 1-year-olds).

Darkness

There is a sign near the door of the multi-stall bathroom at Lola's summer daycare that read "please turn off lights when you leave".

Which is exactly what the person who left the bathroom before me did. Only I was STILL IN THE STALL.

Without the lights on, the windowless bathroom is pitch.
black. dark. Not "allow-my-eyes-to-adjust-dark," but full-blown "can't-see-ANYTHING-dark".

Not enough light to find a cell phone, or wipe, or make it to the door on your own to turn the lights back on without a certain risk of major embarrassment.

I waited it out. It only took about 3 minutes before someone else came in and I was saved. We both got a big chuckle out of the whole thing. Perhaps she laughed a little more than I did. But by that time my legs were numb from sitting still - so I had other things to worry about.

The Closer

Lola is a bit on the slow side when it comes to eating. Or rather, it's not that she is a particularly slow eater - but she takes a while to get going. As a result, it is not uncommon that that we are still sitting at a restaurant, long after everyone has finished, the check has been paid, and our friends have to leave.  It's part of her Six Phase Restaurant Dining Plan.
Phase 1: Begin to eat side dish while refusing main dish
Phase 2: Stall, play, want a cuddle, use the potty, play with silverware
Phase 3: Demand dessert while still refusing main dish
Phase 4: Eat entire dessert
Phase 5: Begin to eat main dish
Phase 6: Insist on eating every last bite of main dish even though everyone else is gone and mommy would really rather throw everything in a to-go box and take it home.

Here we are in Phase 6 at a recent lunch at Corona's with some friends.

Inefficiency

We're heading into the uncharted waters of toddler independence. There are a whole host of things that Lola now insists on doing herself.

One of these things is putting on her own underwear in the morning, a task which can sometimes take upwards of 15 minutes and still end unsuccessfully. It would seem that with only 3 openings in the underwear and 2 legs on her body that the possibilities for error would be limited. Not so. You'd think she'd be hungry for breakfast and throw in the towel quickly. Not so. Me, on the other hand, I've started keeping granola bars in her top dresser drawer so I don't pass out from morning hunger during this demonstration of self-sufficiency.
