Bad Blogger

I have been a very bad blogger. Truth is, I've been battling a fierce case of the lazy's at work - but I rationalize it with the fact that I'm not simply avoiding work in favor of doing personal things - instead I'm just being a sloth. I suppose in some ways I'm taking advantage of what I know will be the last few days for a very long time (my entire life even?) in which I can literally just do nothing. And apparently that includes blogging.

And who suffers? You.
Because of my lack of motivation, you have missed out on a LOT of excitement . . . a family baby shower in Atlanta which featured an appearance by FIVE of my six roommates from college (the only exception being Sarah, who is on the other side of the globe) and the cutest homemade onesies (activity courtesy of DanaShay) this side of the Rio Grande; a visit from Julie and Craig in which we did everything from wash tiny clothes to build not-so-tiny bookshelves; a baby shower in Greenville hosted by the incomparable Beth, Laisa, Melissa, and Catie - and featuring the other wives of the ortho residents in Ben's program (the incredible thing about a shower with people who all have young children is that they tend to give gifts that they know you will need - but that you may not know that you need.) You also missed a visit from my parents in which we basically completed the nursery, fixed up two guest rooms, and bought all the last minute necessities for the baby. Had I have been blogging this whole time, you might have seen pictures, heard funny stories, and on and on. But sadly . . . it was not to be.

I will try to post pictures soon . . . there is a lot to show . . . for now, a picture of me with the gracious hosts of the residents baby shower here in Greenville. (And even this I had to steal off of Catie's blog . . .)

Like Mother, Like Daughter

I hate to write at the expense of family . . . but this was too good to pass up.

A few weekends ago, I was in Atlanta visiting family at the same time that my Grammy was in town from Florida. We were all in the kitchen at my parents house and my Grammy heard my mother turn on the sink disposal. Grammy said to my mom, "Doll, I thought you said the disposal didn't work." My mom admitted that she had told her mother that the disposal "didn't work" because Grammy had a habit of putting things down my parents' disposal that clogged it up. My parents are on a septic system and the disposal is a wee bit on the sensitive side. Grammy seemed to take it in stride and promised that she would be careful in the future.

The punchline?
Flash forward a bit - my mom comes to visit us in Greenville. I am cleaning some leftovers out of the fridge and handing them off to my mom who is standing at the sink. I finally surface from the depth of the refrigerator to find my own mother feeding an ENTIRE NEW YORK STRIP STEAK down our sink disposal. I really couldn't chastise her, I was laughing too hard. I suppose that it's genetic and I, too, will one day attempt to put inappropriate foodstuffs down my own daughter's garbage disposal. Truth be told - with all the good qualities that I hope to inherit from that bloodline, I can certainly afford a good plumber if need be.

Carbon Dating - A Modern Tale

The advancement office at school is working on a PR video which features the college counseling department in all of its glory. It's got student testimonials, as well as video of the Director and me speaking about our philosophies and some "on the job" footage. They actually told us not to wear scarves in the video because people would be able to tell it was filmed in the wintertime. They wanted us to dress in attire that could represent any time of the year - so viewers wouldn't think that the video is dated.

Keep in mind, I am 8 months pregnant and look like I am hiding a watermelon under my dress. So much for dated footage . . . I don't think it will take vast scholarly insight to determine when the video was filmed :)

Painful Joke for Week 34

Q: Why didn't the melons get married on their trip to Hawaii?

False Adverstising

Dear One-A-Day Vitamin Manufacturers,
Something I've been thinking about for the past 10 months or so . . . . It really doesn't seem fair that your prenatal vitamins be marketed as "One-A-Day." Upon opening the box, it becomes immediately evident that there are TWO bottles of pills in there. And you are supposed to take one of EACH every day. Technically speaking, that's TWO a Day. Which is fine by me, I'll take Ten-A-Day if it means keeping my unborn child theoretically safe and secure. But let's just agree to call a spade a spade.
Best Regards,
A loyal (at least for the next 6 weeks) customer

A recipe for disaster

I am teaching a unit on the biological perspective of psychology and we are currently focusing on a study by Rosenzweig involving the effects of enriched vs. impoverished environments on the brain development of rats. I love to use video clips in my class and did a youtube search for "Rosenzweig Rats" to see if there were any videos out there. The first video that popped up was a cooking demonstration for lamb ravioli . . .

No thanks, I'll have the chicken.

Aloha from a Total Slacker

We are at 33 weeks . . . and I have been a bit of a slacker in keeping up my baby-growth-via-food-products diary. For those of you waiting with bated breath, we missed cabbage (30), 4 navel oranges (31), and a jicama (32). Sorry to have fallen behind! As mentioned before, we're at the point where the food item typically represents EITHER the length OR the weight of the baby. A pineapple, for those of you not regularly weighing your tropical fruits, is approximately 4 pounds.
